Aborigine Totem Paintings

The term Aborigine comes from ab, which means ‘from’ and origine, which means ‘the beginning’ – the first humans to settle an area.  The word totem is an object that is an emblem or a symbol.

The traditions of Australian Aborigine art go back over 40,000 years.  Art was the center of their life – an expression of knowledge that gave them strength and power.

After viewing Aborigine bark paintings, x-ray paintings and contemporary art, the students will choose an animal to serve as their totem, one that portrays the kind of individual they are, encompassing their personality traits, character, etc.  Using a photograph of their chosen animal subject, they will sketch, draw and paint it on a simulated bark-like background in the style of the Aborigines, past or present, their choice!
