First Place -
"Nassau off the Beaten Path" by
Rick Whalen

Judge Comment:
Here is a work in which the artist has viewed a scene and
given to us, the viewer, all we need in good perspective free flowing – secure
in line rendering – confident in expression and feeling.

Second Place
- "Island Homes" by
Barbara Keast

Judge Comment: I was struck by
her repetitive shapes – similar, but not the same as though one could see this
through a moving car window. Taking
in a limited palette of color and form - almost like a refrain in music.

Third Place
- "Shell Seeker" by Chi
Cook

Judge Comment: An
oil painting of a child whose figure is well proportioned – with
excellent use of color contrasts – values and depicts the curiosity of a
child. Art is more than rendering every detail. It is seeing in many ways
– in the mirror, into water, through glass.

| A tender portrait of someone whom
I’m sure she knows. |
Collage – an acrylic work of mixed
media whose child is well rendered and displayed a suitable surrounding
that adds to the mystery of the work. |
Excellent and functional piece –
cover fits well – handle works and it is pleasing in appearance. |
A charming piece with a branch that
artistically flows forward – quite composition and skilled use of
color. |

This Beach
Art
Center is “Fantastic.” I am amazed at
your offerings, and your “wealth of fabulous teachers.” One just has to look
at the art of the students and realize the power of the teachers in this
beautiful facility.
Art is an expression that often transcends images we attempt to portray.
As I judged this show I kept getting into each student's work - each is
already a winner. For those that did
not get a ribbon, I would have loved to give more.
I congratulate you on your visual expressions.
