DISCOVER WATERCOLOR PENCILS

Two Day Workshop with MELISSA MILLER NECE, CPSA April 24 - 25
$140 Members, $170 Non-Members

Orange Towel 2 72ppi.jpg (94859 bytes) Water-soluble colored pencils combine the precision and control of pencil drawing with the fluid possibilities of watercolor paint. Have fun exploring the many ways these versatile drawing tools can be used - wet or dry, alone or for mixed media. They're great for artists' journals and plein air, for sketching and serious artwork and can be used with pen and ink and traditional watercolor. Derwent, leading makers and innovators in this fine art medium, will provide five types of pencils for use in this class. The class will include fun exercises, two guided painting projects, and plenty of time to work on your own subject. With all pencils provided, including some you can keep, the supplies to bring are minimal - a couple brushes, some graphite pencils and fine line art markers if you wish. Some paper will be provided, but you may also bring any kind of bristol or watercolor paper or board. (Materials list available on request.)

About the instructor:
Melissa Miller Nece is one of the foremost colored pencil artists in the country and a popular instructor of drawing and painting. She is Ways and Means Director for and a Signature Member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a Signature Member of the Miniature Artists of America, and is actively involved with other artists' groups. Her corporate collectors include the Cumberland Pencil Co. (makers of Derwent) in England, and her work has been featured in other advertising and in national magazines and books on colored pencil. Melissa has a BFA from Lake Erie College and has been teaching locally since 1990.

"When I paint, I get my visual information from observation and allow my subconscious feelings to merge with my visual impressions on the canvas. I am interested in the figure and the background, how they relate to each other, and their relationship to the composition as a whole. I talk to the people I paint, and this helps me to connect with my feelings about them."

Upcoming Workshops (2011)

Elio Camacho Plein Air Painting Workshop March 11 - 13, 2011
By popular demand, Elio Camacho will return to the Beach Art Center in 2011 for one, and perhaps two workshops. If the above dates fill, a second weekend will be scheduled.
Mixing color with brush strokes, compositional studies and the discipline of changing light conditions will be explored.
Long an admirer of master impressionists Bogart, Sorrolla and Fechin, Camacho studied intensively with Ovanes Berberian, leading to his realist style with abstract brush work.
Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to work with this nationally acclaimed San Francisco artist.

Plein Air - The Art of Study with Artist Robert J. Simone
March 19th, 20th. and 21st. (Completed)

This workshop will ABSOLUTELY COVER EVERYTHING you need to know about landscape painting. Robert is an experienced instructor and veteran of plein air painting events throughout Florida. His three day workshops are packed with essential information, painting demonstrations, field instruction and group critiques.

In particular, this workshop will explore the original intent of plein air painters, which was to accumulate knowledge and practice continually. Information gathered in these "Field Studies" was then used as reference material for larger studio works. This course serves as a prerequisite for a follow up workshop entitled "Painting the Studio Landscape".

Elio Camacho Painting Workshop (Completed)
Three Day Workshop - February 6 - 8, 2010

Paint with the fabulous San Francisco area artist Elio Camacho at the Beach Art Center. Brush strokes, time management and changing light in plein air conditions, color temperature and more will be the focus of this two day workshop.

Born in 1972 on the island of Madeira, hundreds of miles south of Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean, Elio Camacho immigrated to California with his family in 1975. Long an admirer of the master impressionists such as Bogart, Sorrolla, and Fechin, in his mid-twenties Camacho decided to follow his childhood passion of fine art. Intensive studies with Ovanes Berberian led to the development of distinct representational style with abstract brush work. All of his paintings are in the Ala Prima style to capture the first impression and light on a given subject. He has exhibited in galleries and plein air painting events throughout the Western United States.

Workshop for 2008 (Completed)

Painting A Day Workshop with Carol Marine
October 28 & 29, 2008

Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills. There is a fast growing group of people, called daily painters, who do small paintings every day, post photographs of their paintings on a blog, and then sell them through the Internet, with a usual starting price of $100.  In this way, many artists are finding they can grow quickly in skill and finally make a living with their art, after struggling for years in galleries and at art fairs.
We will spend most of our time on the basic principles of design - the rules of composition, value, color, and shape - and how to apply them to small still lives. We will then experiment with color relationships using an alternative to the traditional color wheel, explore color mixing, and how each color "leans" towards others. We will push our compositions to avoid the "floating" objects and learn the one, simple rule to avoid a boring still life. Throughout, there will be demos with handouts and one-on-critiques.
Finally, we will learn how to set up a daily painting blog, the in's and out's of Internet Selling, marketing your work, etc. There will be reference material on these issues to take home.

Carol Marine
Carol Marine grew up in the small town of Harper, TX, in a dome house designed and built by her parents. Carol's parents were very creative (mother a weaver and potter, father a boat-builder) and encouraged Carol to pursue her dreams in art.
After graduating from high school she attended the University of Texas at Austin. Carol was dissatisfied with her art classes at UT, as she felt the professors rarely taught the basics of design and technique. In spite of this, Carol graduated in 2000 with a degree in fine art.
Carol spend the next 3 years painting and studying other artists she liked. She then spent 2 years doing web design before returning to painting and in 2005 signed up with the Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX. Carol's work has since been featured in local and national magazines, including Southwest Art. In 2006 she was invited to participate in the "Artist for the New Century" exhibition at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont.
In 2006, Carol began her painting a day project through her blog, please see: www.carolmarine.blogspot.com and has since been featured several times in the "Lines and Colors" and "Empty Easel" online magazines. She is a member of the Daily Paintworks a group of 12 notable painters who paint everyday and sell their work on the Internet.  Carol resides in Austin, TX with her husband and son.
