cancel our Creative Kids Summer Camp for 2020.

Back by popular demand the Beach Art Center will be offering our
"Creative Kids" Summer Camp for 8 weeks beginning June 1st!

FULL DAY CAMP

9am - 3pm, Monday - Friday
June 1st - July 31st
Fun for ages 6-15
$203.50 per week for Members
$220.00 per week for Non-Members

Meet the Masters - work in clay, paints, mixed media, pastels - in the style of a different Master each session.  Full-day campers will focus on the Masters and various cultures.  Each week the central theme will revolve around a different artist. 

Campers will alternate working in our gallery space and pottery studio, learning about the style of each artist and applying that to their work in clay, watercolors, pastels, mixed media and more.  Each week will be accompanied by visual materials to acquaint the students with the artist’s work.

Student supplies are included in the price of the camp. 

We encourage students to wear old clothes – creativity can be messy!

SUMMER CAMP CLASSES 2020

CREATURES FROM THE SEA

Week 1:  June 1st-June 5th
Full Day, Monday-Friday

Students will dive into the art work of Robert Wyland, experiencing the amazing undersea world of Wyland art. Robert Wyland is an American Artist who celebrates underwater sea-life. He is known for his colorful works of sea life painted on skyscrapers across the country, bronze sculptures, watercolors and oils.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces and work on drawing, print making and painting based on sculptures, paintings and prints of Wyland’s works.

BAMBOO AND CRITTERS

Week 1:  June 1st-June 5th
Half Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-12:00pm

The summer is a perfect scenario to paint with ink. Japanese Calligraphy is done in black ink and water, however this course called Shodo Kana uses a few other colors. We will paint a variety of scenes and animals in black, red, white and gold. Primarily, we learn Japanese Calligraphy, so we will start with your name in Japanese!  We will also learn to paint bamboo (very important in the learning of Shodo.) Then we will paint critters like butterflies and Praying Mantis. Students will learn to use the brush and how to shade in tones of black. Be sure to wear an apron or old clothes.

CHA CHA CHIA!

Week 2:  June 8th-June 12th
Full Day, Monday-Friday

Students will have fun creating their very own ceramic chia pet while learning about the artist Albrecht Drurer. Drurer was a German painter and printmaker who did a body of realistic nature studies including Young Hare.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by Albrecht Drurer. Students will create prints drawing/paintings and ceramic pieces based on Drurer’s work.

CARTOONING

Week 2:  June 8th-June 12th

Students will learn how to draw and detail their favorite cartoon characters and pick up some cartooning tricks of the trade to tell their own cartoon stories!

COLORFUL MEXICAN
FOLK ART

Week 3:  June 15th-June 19th

Have fun exploring the colorful world of of Mexican Folk Art and create an ancient Amate Bark painting and colorful ceramic sun wall hanging inspired by the Nahua Indians who are descendants of the Aztecs. Throw a bowl or cup on the wheel and decorate it with pattern and color inspired by Mexican Folk Art.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by colorful and playful Mexican Folk Art. Students will create paintings, sculptures and pressed metal foil art inspired by Mexican Folk Art.

PAINT IN ACTION

Week 3:  June 15th-June 19th
Half Day, Monday-Friday

This class uses techniques of Jackson Pollack's Abstract style of painting.  We will combine materials to express ideas through the art elements of Color, Texture, and Shape.  Students will create paintings and collage inspired by Abstract Expressionist artist, Jackson Pollack.  We will work with paper, watercolors, and tempera paint.

DAY DREAMING WITH
MARC CHAGALL

Week 4:  June 22nd-June 26th
Full Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-3:00pm

Modern artist Marc Chagall’s work is characterized by dreamlike qualities infused with touches of humor, emotion, storytelling and cheerful color, (and animals such as roosters!)  Students will enjoy creating quirky street-scapes inspired by Chagall. “There’s just something really fun about crooked buildings and random things flying through the air!”
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by Marc Chagall. Students will create colorful roosters and tiny ceramic houses that could be used as a fairy house in the garden. Students will use a variety of media to make works based on Chagall.

CLAYMATION ANIMATION

Week 4: June 22nd-June 26th
Half Day, Monday-Friday
9:00am-12:00pm

Students will learn how to make their own claymation video with their own clay characters, sets, and special effects using stop-action video techniques.  We will use non-hardening clay and assorted materials for set-building.  Each student should bring their own flash drive to store their completed movie on.

GET SURREAL WITH DALI

Week 5:  July 6th-July 10th
Full Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-3:00pm

Surrealist artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was born in Figures Spain. Dali was one of the greatest surrealist who translated dreams into an artwork. Dali was a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and designer. Students will create dreamlike landscapes, animals and perhaps even be inspired by their own dreams while sculpting, painting or drawing.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by Salvadore Dali. Students will create a ceramic melting clock, paintings and drawings with dreamlike qualities just as Dali did.

LEARNING SCRATCHBOARD

Week 5:  July 6th-July 10th
Half Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-12:00pm

Students will learn the technique of Scratch Boarding with tools and special paints.  This is an introductory class to introduce the medium and types of tools and techniques available.  Students will be able to choose a subject matter they like and the object is transferred by transfer paper to the scratchboard clay and then etched.

NATIVE AMERICAN ART

Week 6:  July 13th-July 17th
Full Day, Monday-Friday

Students will enjoy creating Dream Catchers, Talking Sticks, Ceramic Totem Poles and pottery pieces while learning about the different symbols and the cultural meaning behind each piece. 
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by Native American art. Students will use a variety of media to create Dream Catchers, Talking Sticks and drawings/paintings.

ETCHING CLASS

Week 6:  July 13th-July 17th
Half Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-12:00pm

Students will learn how to use stencils and etch on various surfaces with etchall® etching crème.  It is a re-usable crème that produces a white opaque, permanent etched finish on glass, mirror, ceramic, porcelain, marble and slate. 

The creme is thick enough to etch designs with a stencil. It can be used on round or vertical objects. We will be using 4” x 4” beveled glass and mirrors during this class.

Student’s will learn how to make re-usable stencils.  


Note: The Art and Craft Material Institute has approved etchall® etching creme to be used by children 12 years and older, children under 12 years can use etchall under the supervision of an adult. It conforms to ASTM-D4236.

GET TO THE POINT
WITH POINTILLISM

Week 7:  July 20th-July 24th
Full Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-3:00pm

Students will learn about George Seurat a French post impressionist from the 1800’s, who created paintings with the pointillism technique. Pointillism art is basically just painting with dots. But in a more complicated description, it is a technique where you do not mix the pigments of color but instead have varying dots of color that require the viewer to combine the colors. Their mind and eye blend the colors for them.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by George Seurat. Students will create paintings and use a variety of media to make works inspired by Seurat.

FUN WITH ORIGAMI

Week 7:  July 20th-July 24th
Half Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-12:00pm

Origami is an activity that can blow your mind with the amazing things you can make with paper. Origami is based on Mathematics, if you can count and keep count when you fold paper, you can do Origami. Origami originally came from China, but the Chinese Neve imagined what could be done with paper. Japanese children start doing Origami at three years old and continue throughout their lives. We will make a crane, a mouse (for sure). This is the year of the mouse in the Chinese Zodiac. As you learn and we go along, maybe we can do a frog, and who knows what else. Let's have fun with paper!

WHAT'S YOUR REALITY?

Week 8:  July 27th-July 31st
Full Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-3:00pm

Students will tap in to their imagination to create their own surreal art work based on how they see the world just as Renee Magritte did. They will create works based on their personality and interest. Rene Magritte’s version of Surrealism contains witty and thought provoking images. Magritte challenges our thoughts of reality, places, and ordinary objects. He gives new meaning to familiar things.
Students will work on the wheel and hand build in the pottery studio to create ceramic pieces inspired by Rene Magritte. Students will also explore Magritte’s work through painting, printmaking and drawing.

APPAREL DESIGN

Week 8:  July 27th-July 31st
Half Day, Monday-Friday 
9:00am-12:00pm

Create your own fashion with a custom apparel design! Students will get creative while exploring relief printing, based on a reductive process- carving the non-image away from flat. Focusing on composition and pattern, we will look for inspiration from the world around us. These custom designs will be carved from linoleum blocks and then hand printed onto a t-shirt and canvas tote. The possibilities are endless!
