This series explores the discipline of careful observation through the comparative method, capturing composition by measuring relationships between objects rather than relying on assumption. It emphasizes deliberate control of paint handling and edge quality, considering how forms emerge, soften, and dissolve into their surroundings. Through the thoughtful integration of value and color, the work creates a convincing impression of light, revealing form, depth, and the quiet complexity of the still life.

Meet your Instructor
Jim Gigurtsis
Jim Gigurtsis paints figures that refuse to reveal themselves, working in oil on canvas without knowing the outcome until the image unexpectedly emerges. Working primarily in triptychs, and occasionally in diptychs or single studies, he creates large-scale figurative works that draw on sacred imagery to confront themes of migration, war, and persecution. A parallel body of work explores the ways individuals resist being defined by others' perceptions. His portrait studies present unresolved and multifaceted views of a single sitter.
Born in Greece, Jim attended a summer programme at the Slade School of Fine Art and lived and painted in London until 2016. He now lives and works in Seminole, Florida. Jim’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the Dunedin Fine Art Center and Creative Pinellas, and is held in private and public collections internationally.
