Discover the luminous beauty of encaustic painting and the endless creative possibilities of mixed media.
This beginner-friendly one-day workshop introduces students to the ancient art of encaustic painting using molten beeswax, damar resin, and richly pigmented wax. You'll learn the fundamentals of working safely with hot wax while exploring layering, texture, collage, and mark-making techniques to create unique works of art. Whether you're an experienced artist or trying encaustic for the first time, this workshop encourages experimentation and creative expression in a supportive environment.
What You'll Learn
Learn the fundamentals of encaustic painting, including safe studio practices and proper use of heated tools.
Discover how to apply and fuse layers of molten wax to create luminous, translucent surfaces.
Explore techniques for carving, scraping, and building texture to add depth and dimension.
Create one-of-a-kind monotypes and incorporate them into your encaustic work.
Embed vintage papers, tissue, photographs, and other collage materials directly into the wax.
Enhance your artwork with R&F Pigment Sticks, drawing oils, and a variety of mark-making materials.
Experiment with layering, transparency, and mixed-media techniques to develop your own creative style.
Complete several original encaustic artworks to take home while gaining the confidence to continue exploring this versatile medium.
What to Bring
All encaustic materials and tools will be provided. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that can get messy and bring an apron if desired. You may also wish to bring photocopies, tissue papers, or other collage materials you'd like to incorporate into your artwork. Please bring a snack and beverage with you as well.
Please note that Bay Palm Blvd will be closed on October 24. Students will need to drive around and park in back of the building.

Meet your Instructor
Shelley Jean
Shelley Jean is a contemporary abstract artist specializing in encaustic painting. With over 34 years of experience in the public and private education sectors, Shelley has dedicated her career to both teaching and creating. She holds a B.S. in Art Education from the University of South Florida and studied at the Florida School of The Arts.
Shelley is passionate about sharing her craft with others, offering in-person workshops, private mentoring, and online sessions. She is the founder and president of Florida Wax, a chapter of International Encaustic Artists, and a Core Artist for R&F Paints. Her popular Encaustic Art for the Soul retreats take her to creative destinations across the globe, including Asheville, North Carolina, Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, Hawthorne, Florida, and Tuscany, Italy.
In addition to her workshops, Shelley’s work has been widely exhibited and featured in Wax Fusion magazine. Her studio, Secret Place Studio, is located in Orlando, Florida, where she continues to explore the possibilities of encaustic art.
